Mossos d’Esquadra Headquarters
Barcelona, Spain
The comprehensive rehabilitation of the pre-existing Mossos d’Esquadra Headquarters should be understood as a total refurbishment. It includes its almost complete interior demolition, only preserving its load-baring the structure. This allows for the optimal distribution of the new program and presents a new image for the required Mossos and police services.
A new physiognomy is envisioned for the building. A rectangular courtyard is introduced in its core, which allows for ventilation and natural lighting of all units. On the outer shell, a new façade shelters the interior spaces and protects them from views and solar incidence. It also provides a new representative image for the institution.
The new courtyard, featuring a large impluvium of diffuse natural light for the interior of the building, has its base split among two levels. On one hand, the first floor is landscaped and functions as a space for meeting and interaction. On the other hand, the second floor lays open to the café and overlooks the garden. The two top floors of the building are are recessed from the street line on their exterior facades. They are also recessed from the courtyard space on the inside, generating a series of naturally lit collective work spaces and improving the lighting conditions of the lower levels. The central void is covered by a series of movable elements that seek sun protection and allow for natural ventilation. They provide interior comfort while improving the energy efficiency of the new Mossos d’Esquadra Headquarters.
