Public Housing in Arganzuela

Madrid, Spain

Public Housing in Arganzuela is designed for a steep site in Madrid’s Arganzuela district, where a level difference of more than nine meters shapes both the building volume and the distribution of uses. The project adopts a U-shaped form open to the street, creating a clear relationship with the urban fabric while improving access, natural light, and views into a shared courtyard. The ground floor, set at elevation 699 m, works as the main entry level for the residential and commercial areas, activating the street edge and organizing circulation in a simple, legible way.

Above this base, 167 housing units are arranged to make full use of the allowed buildable area. Every home faces an exterior façade, either towards the street or the open courtyard, ensuring consistent daylight, cross-ventilation, and an efficient balance between usable and built space. Below the access level, two floors accommodate public facilities connected directly to Francisco Nieva Street, while two deeper levels house parking and technical areas served by a continuous ramp. Through structural efficiency, functional clarity, and careful adaptation to the terrain, Public Housing in Arganzuela delivers a balanced urban solution that supports daily life and strengthens the neighborhood.
